The shocking truth about success:
Most people simply accept too little.
You’ve heard of the 80/20 Rule, Right?
Yeah…I’d heard it too. Hundreds of times.
But recently I heard a quote from Dan Kennedy that had me thinking about it in a new perspective.
“Go across any segment of working people, and the rule remains.
80% of people struggle. And 20% do well.
…And even within that 20%
1% are doing Great!
5% are doing pretty well..
14% are doing better than most..
While the other 80% are clueless and shoeless, wondering how on earth those evil rich people keep beating them.”
Side Note: Most people are unwilling to do the work to become apart of that 1% and complain as to why others keep getting ahead.
There are times in my life where I’ve been in the top 1% at my company or even industry wide and at the same time I was the one person producing consistent results.
Read that last sentence again…
Not top 1%. The top 1. The first. The biggest. The best.. Justin that’s a bit egotistical..
Yeah! I get it.. but truth is that I was never out for myself but rather to truly make an impact within my industry. I was on a mission to help the people I taught this Six Sigma and lean concept to. I wanted to help more businesses make more money with the same amount or less time spent per item. The plan was to help them become more efficient in production and business through the right process and procedures.
It’s possible that I was the top dog at the company and within the industry with the right process in place. We as a team unit were able to close sales and break industry wide records in regards to KPIs in our area compared to our competitors…Not to mention we had complete buy in from all of the team members as well. We had built an army that knew the mission and their role.
In 2020, I had an annual sales goal of $2.4 mil. By May, I was on track to hit that goal before the end of August..
Then came September…
In September, I felt I had achieved and fine tuned this bullet proof process to scale and grow this company. We were on track to purchase more locations and duplicate this same process. We had it figured out as a shop we were able to out perform other competitors area wide in performance and in Net profits, beating the average net sales percentage across the entire collision industry.
I felt I had achieved more than what was hired to do and the owner of the company that I worked for had a mutual agreement that if I hit sales numbers that I would be brought on a partner..
The process I implemented was a well oiled machine that didn’t need any babysitting. The only need was to make sure we kept up with our performance metrically.
That was until I was called into the owners office and told they no longer needed me and that he felt at that time I had worked myself out of a job…So. On that very day I walked out of that office with my last paycheck in hand. As I walked out and walked to my car. All I could think about is all that hard work, late nights, sacrifice away from my family.
Now, I will say this! I don’t usually let things like business get to me but when this occurred I was completely blind sided…And obviously I was asking myself these questions…
Was he using me this whole time ?
Did I not perform enough?
What could I have done better?
Need less to say..At the end of the day. I did everything in my power to make sure I put my best foot forward day in and day out and the people I was doing it for(meaning the team) knew I was genuine and wanted them to thrive!
The lesson here, in my own experience:
The key to reaching top 1% while achieving the literal #1 spot in your line of work is…
Simply do the work and add value to others lives…
You’d probably like it to be more complicated. It is, but only slightly.
It’s doing more of the RIGHT things.
Most people don’t get this. They assume running a business or sales is easy, so they just haphazardly wander through their days.
They send half assed emails, reply to messages quickly, attend all the meetings, take tons of notes, try to suck up to important people, network randomly, pull the old “start-stop-start-start-stop-start-stop” routine on nearly everything they pursue.
And the sad thing is, many people think that being busy means you are productive. But the truth is most people only do enough to get by until the end of that work day..
This is just my experience, of course, and I’m biased about what it takes. Still…
If you aren’t willing to do what it takes to get in the top 1%… or at LEAST the top 20%… you’re probably reading the wrong blog…
If you can consistently do the work that is actually valuable and producing results, it’s inevitable that you’ll start to build a business or even if it’s a side job. You will start cash flowing more than your day job, and from there, you can pretty much have your pick of jobs…Or clients….Or customers.
Or — almost literally — whatever you want.
I’ll admit most would disagree.
But then again, I do things differently than most. I teach differently (and apparently a bit controversial). I am a bit intense for your normal person.
The reason is that people are created to do great things but most stroll through life doing just enough to get by. I’m on a mission to help people that are sick and tired of being sick and tired..
I have taken the same concept of helping the business owners and teaching people like you how to become successful using the talent you were born with!
The process is simple. But most avoid the work it take to truly become successful and thrive in life..
